Endurance

Groups for athletes aged 10 (school year 6) and over with no upper age limit.

Focuses on building stamina and maintaining pace over longer distances, typically ranging from 800 metres to marathon races. It requires a combination of physical fitness, mental resilience, and strategic pacing.

Endurance includes: track (typically over 800m), cross country, and road running

Coaching Groups

We have several coaching groups for our endurance runners catering for all ages and abilities. Each group follows it's own training schedule and training venues may very. Find our more about our differnt endurance groups below

Our lead coach, Alex Budd, is an England Athletics Event Group Coach specialising in endurance. A dedicated member of City of Portsmouth Athletic Club, Alex brings a wealth of experience and passion to his training, having been an active athlete for many years.

Supporting Alex is Chris Spinks, an Assistant Athletic Coach. Chris is an active runner himself and brings a lot of passion and knowledge to the role. Also working alongside Alex and Chris is Beth Bramell. Beth is an assistant coach who works predominatently with the younger (U17) members of the group.

Together, Alex's coaching team bring a bredth of knowledge and experience and are dedicated to ensuring their athletes are supported to develop good training habits and perform to their highest potential. 

Introduction

Our coaching offers a structured performance training programme which is subdivided into a programme for track athletes (principally 800m & 1500m runners); with a second programme for athletes who are predominantly road based (5k – Marathon).

Many of the National Athletics League (NAL) team and athletes competing at a national level are drawn from this group. The group has a strong team ethos, travelling to events together and offers social activities.

Who is this group for?

This group is for athletes aged 15 upwards. Although the group is focused on U20 and senior level competition, U17’s that are performing well are encouraged to join to develop good training habits and to benefit / learn from training with senior athletes.

When is Training?

Training sessions are held on the following days and times:

  • Tuesday & Thursday: 6:30 pm at Mountbatten Centre

  • Saturday: 9:30 am Hills or Endurance – Mountbatten Centre or Portsdown Hill

Who is it for

Endurance and middle distance coaching is offered for under 13 (school years 6 and 7) & over (with no upper age limit). We welcome athletes of all abilities and have several training groups to cater for all our atheltes different needs and abilites.

When is training

The clubs main training days are Mondays evenings, Tuesday evenings, and Thursday evenings.

Many of the endurance groups also train at the weekend as well. Each group follows their own schedule and you can find out more from the group coaches.

Where is training

Our home base is the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. PO2 9QA.

Training venues for endurance groups can vary to allow for a well rounded training schedule. Coaches for each training group will provide you more information.

What equipment is needed

Initially, there is no special equipment required.

  • Clothing suitable for running

  • A good pair of sports trainers 

  • A bottle of water

During the summer months it is advisable to apply sunblock before attending.

Once you begin regular training, a good pair of cross country spikes, trail shoes and road trainers will be required (requirements will very depending on the time of year).

Club vests are required if you wish to compete, and a club hoody is also availble. These can be purchased from Alexandra Sports, loctated at Lakeside.

Cost

All athletes can have up to 4 free trail sessions before committing to joining the club.

We have several membership options available to suit the varied needs of our members. 

  • Junior membership is £108

  • Full membership is £110

Prices are for the whole membership year (1st April - 31st March) and the cost is the same regarless of when in the year you join the club (with the expection of those joining between 1st Jan - 31st March)
