Throwing

Groups for athletes aged 10 (school year 6) and over with no upper age limit.

Focuses on building stamina and maintaining pace over longer distances, typically ranging from 800 metres to marathon races. It requires a combination of physical fitness, mental resilience, and strategic pacing.

Endurance includes: track (typically over 800m), cross country, and road running

Coaching Groups

Our throw groups cater for all abilities and start at U13. Each group follows it's own training schedule and days and times may vary. Find out more about our training groups below. 

Bron Carter

Bron Carter is an internationally recognised coach specialising in shot put, javelin, and discus, with over 30 years of coaching experience at City of Portsmouth Athletic Club. A dedicated mentor, she has helped to develop seven international athletes and three Paralympians.

Beyond the club, Bron has played a key role in disability sport, and is a highly accomplished competitor herself  (13-time World Weightlifting Champion and 11-time European Champion). 

Bron remains passionate about developing para athletes and helping every individual reach their full potential.

Introduction

This coaching group focuses on development of athletes and seated throwers. Athletes are fed into this group through Tony Hookers group.

At the moment, Bron's training group is not accepting any new athletes and enquiries about new athletes should be directed to Tony Hooker.

Athletes looking to develop thier skills, and seated throwers.

When is Training?

Training sessions are held on the following days and times:

  • Tuesday Evening at Mountbatten Centre

  • Thursday Evening at Mountbatten Centre

Who is it for

Throw coaching is offered for under 13 (school years 6 and 7) & over (with no upper age limit). We welcome athletes of all abilities and have training groups to cater for all our atheltes different needs and abilites.

When is training

The main training days are Tuesday evenings and Thursday evenings.

Each group follows their own schedule and you can find out more from the group coaches.

Where is training

Our home base is the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. PO2 9QA.

What equipment is needed

Initially, there is no special equipment required.

  • Clothing suitable for sport

  • A good pair of sports trainers 

  • A bottle of water

During the summer months it is advisable to apply sunblock before attending.

Once you begin regular training, a good pair of javelin spikes and/or throwing shoes will be required and those throwing the hammer may benefit from a glove (requirements may very depending on the time of year).

Club vests are required if you wish to compete, and a club hoody is also availble. These can be purchased from Alexandra Sports, loctated at Lakeside.

Cost

All athletes can have up to 4 free trail sessions before committing to joining the club.

We have several membership options available to suit the varied needs of our members. 

  • Junior membership is £108

  • Full membership is £110

Prices are for the whole membership year (1st April - 31st March) and the cost is the same regarless of when in the year you join the club (with the expection of those joining between 1st Jan - 31st March)
